Biography

Australiana Girl  is a fairly apt description of Queensland country artist Georgette May, however that’s certainly not the sum of all her parts.  With a voice that can eloquently straddle pop, country and even classical, she has found her musical truth firmly planted in ‘place’.  Hailing from life on a working cattle farm, framed by verdant cane-fields, a down-to-earth life is where she resonates most. She’s as genuine as they come.

Eager to continue the craft of Australian storytelling alongside influences like Sara Storer, John Williamson, Slim Dusty and The Sunny Cowgirls, Georgette feels this is the heart and soul that Oz country music is all about.  Singing country about country and the host of characters, stories and emotions that it entails.

Currently mid-way through a Bachelor of Music at the Con, May’s palette of musical skills is ever expanding.  Already, she has opened a 2024 gig for The Angels, and has toured extensively with country children’s show Blue Gum Farm TV, alongside Cilla Pershouse of ABC’s Muster Dogs (season two).  Her solo performing schedule has been steadily growing over the past two years with bookings to play festivals, shows, community events, business awards and more.

Wise beyond her years, Georgette aims to be a rural advocate for those wanting more opportunities in the arts. Since having to trial multiple boarding schools to find a place that supported her career goals, she recognises an unfairness in the lack of accessibility for many regarding such possibilities.

"Everyone deserves the right to follow their artistic journey, and I believe it is important that all creatives in rural communities get a fair go."

Her early love of the arts lead to attending eisteddfods, summer schools, and taking lead roles in musicals.   The singer-songwriter also took out champion place at a region-wide talent quest, singing a country tinged rendition of Joplin’s Me & Bobby McGee.

Currently based in Mackay, May is writing material for her debut release. Songs evoking themes such as home, family, following dreams, fair dinkum folk, and the beauty of this great land.  Although her musical taste spans from country, rock and pop from ‘back then’ to now, her heart has chosen true-blue country with a taste of Australiana. Audiences eagerly embrace the earthy tapestry she continues to weave.
